No Roads? There’s a drone for that

Abstract:

A billion people in the world lack access to all-season roads. Could the structure of the internet provide a model for how to reach them? Andreas Raptopoulos of Matternet thinks so. He introduces a new type of transportation system that uses electric autonomous flying machines to deliver medicine, food, goods and supplies wherever they are needed.

Objectives, Methods and Results of Surveys Carried out in the field of Urban Freight Transport: An International Comparison

Abstract:

In industrialized countries, the number of studies and surveys in the field of urban goods movement (UGM) has increased considerably over recent years. This paper compares the objectives, methods and results in this sector and focuses on nine industrialized countries of Europe, America and Asia. This non_extensive review shows that in spite of different framework methods and models, similar trends emerge at the economic and environmental levels. It is necessary to take into account urban logistics in the broadest meaning of the term. Cooperative action seems to bear fruit providing that information and dialogue take place in the long_term with all the operators involved. The development of intelligent transport systems (ITS) and better management of urban facilities may improve these attempts. We present our viewpoint in order to shed light on research oriented towards the sustainable management of urban logistics.

O*NET

Abstract:

The O*NET program is the nation's primary source of occupational information. Central to the project is the O*NET database, containing information on hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors. The database, which is available to the public at no cost, is continually updated by surveying a broad range of workers from each occupation. Information from this database forms the heart of O*NET Online, an interactive application for exploring and searching occupations. The database also provides the basis for our Career Exploration Tools, a set of valuable assessment instruments for workers and students looking to find or change careers.

The Occupational Information Network (O*NET) is being developed under the sponsorship of the US Department of Labor/Employment and Training Administration (USDOL/ETA) through a grant to the North Carolina Department of Commerce. Learn more about the O*NET project partners.

Part1: Better and cleaner urban transport for Europe

Abstract:

Part: 1 | Better and cleaner urban transport for Europe
Urban traffic is responsible for 40% of CO2 road transport emissions. In Europe, 9 citizens out of 10 are exposed to harmful particle emissions that are higher than the tolerated norm. Time wasted in traffic jams will soon cost 1% of the European Unions GDP. In terms of urban transport, the European Union contributes to financing infrastructures and equipment, but also supports projects aiming at replacing petrol by alternative and clean fuels. Most cities in the EU are putting in place a mix of advanced technologies and transport policy measures, such as alternative traffic management systems to combine mobility and quality of life. The EU cooperates with cities, notably through the CIVITAS network, to favor the exchange of know-how and best practices at European level.

Potential for off-peak freight deliveries to commercial areas

Abstract:

As discussed throughout the project (Holguin-Veras 2006), the implementation of off-peak deliveries (OPD) requires both receivers that are willing to accept deliveries during the off-peak hours, as well as carriers willing to provide the service. The project highlighted that receivers, by virtue of being the end customer, have a great deal of influence on what the carriers do. In this context, should a significant number of receivers decide to request off-peak deliveries, it is almost certain that the carriers would follow suit. This fact has important implications because short of mandatory regulations forcing the private sector to do off-peak deliveries-it is clear that the long-term sustainability of off-peak delivery programs require policy incentives to mitigate the impacts on receivers, which are likely to face additional costs. On the other hand, carriers-that stand to benefit from the increased productivity derived from faster travel speeds during the off-peak hours-are likely to participate in off-peak deliveries if sufficient number of receivers request the service. These concepts are to be kept in mind throughout this section. This report focuses on the implementation of off-peak delivery policies.
