FRETURB V3, A Policy Oriented Software Tool for Modelling Urban Goods Movement

Abstract:

This paper presents a land use and tour-based model for urban goods movement simulation. Three modules interact each other: a "delivery-pick-up model" including transport of goods between all the economic activities in the city; a "town management module", (transport of goods and raw material for public and building works, urban networks maintenance and removals); and a "purchasing trips model", which concerns trips of consumers during their purchasing activities. This paper will focus on the delivery-pick-ups model. Thanks to the results of thorough establishment surveys coupled with driver surveys, this model estimates, on a town zoning, the goods movements (road occupancy, just as by vehicle flows as by on-road parking vehicles) according to the logistic strategy of the shippers and of the haulers, the environment and the characteristics of the establishments and the urban land use. It is divided into four parts: methodology, description of the different components of the model, description of the functionality of the software and discussion of some results.

Good to Great and the Social Sectors

Abstract:

Creates a framework for management practices in the social sector not based on business practices. Effective leaders must blend "executive" and "legislative" leadership styles by making decisions by themselves and also persuading and exercising political skills to induce the correct decisions. These leaders must know when to use either style of leadership.

GoodTrip—A New Approach for Modelling and Evaluation of Urban Goods Distribution

Abstract:

The GoodTrip model estimates goods flows, urban freight traffic and its impacts. This paper discusses the theory and application of the model, that is based on logistical chains. Liveability and accessibility of urban areas are influenced by freight traffic resulting from logistical choices in the supply chain, like warehouse location, delivery frequencies, vehicle type and routing. To support decision making it is necessary to model these choices and their effects, in current and future situations.

In GoodTrip the logistical chain links activities of consumers, supermarkets, hypermarkets, distribution centers and producers. Based on consumer demand, the GoodTrip model calculates the volume per goods type in m3 in every zone. The goods flows in the logistical chain are determined by the spatial distribution of activities and the market shares of each activity type - consumer, supermarket, hypermarket, distribution centre, etc. This attraction constraint calculation starts with consumers and ends at the producers or at the city borders. A vehicle loading algorithm then assigns the goods flows to vehicles. A shortest route algorithm assigns all tours of each transportation mode to the corresponding infrastructure networks. This results in logistical indicators, vehicle mileage, network loads, emissions and finally energy use of urban freight distribution.

GoodTrip is a tool to evaluate different concepts of freight distribution from both a societal as economical viewpoint, by using geographical, economical and logistical data. This was done in a case study for the City of Groningen The modelling approach is innovative and the first results are promising. Model output discriminates clearly between different alternative freight distribution concepts. The modelling results comply with empirical data and real life experience.

Google’s driverless car

Abstract:

Sebastian Thrun helped build Google's amazing driverless car, powered by a very personal quest to save lives and reduce traffic accidents. Jaw dropping video shows the DARPA Challenge-winning car motoring through busy city traffic with no one behind the wheel, and dramatic test drive footage from TED2011 demonstrates how fast the thing can really go.

GPS data analysis for understanding urban goods movement

Abstract:

This paper aims to investigate the contribution of GPS survey techniques for urban goods movement characterization and diagnosis, more precisely the implementation and application issues related to the introduction of real-time data transmission procedures and phone tools with integrated GPS devices. We propose a GPS-based data collection method for urban freight route characterization using a Smartphone application. After testing and calibrating the data processing tool, we analyze the main results on a baseline of about 900 rounds, with the R software. This analysis allows us to define the characteristics of the overall routes as well as the environmental impacts linked with the categories of roads: urban highways, main roads and residential streets. Moreover, the study shows that the environmental behavior of the driver is connected with the main activity of the carriers. The complementarity between GPS and traditional urban freight surveys is finally discussed.
